The state flag of Iowa features three vertical stripes of blue, white, and red, inspired by the French Tricolor, reflecting Iowas history as part of the Louisiana Territory once controlled by France. Centered on the white stripe is a bald eagle holding a blue ribbon in its beak that bears the state motto, “Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.” Below the eagle, the word “Iowa” appears in red capital letters. The flag was designed by Dixie Cornell Gebhardt and officially adopted in 1921, symbolizing Iowas heritage, patriotism, and commitment to freedom.
