The state flag of Illinois features the state seal centered on a white field. The seal depicts a bald eagle holding a shield in its talons, clutching a banner in its beak with the state motto, “State Sovereignty, National Union.” The eagle is perched on a rock inscribed with the date August 26, 1818, when Illinois adopted its first constitution. The shield displays thirteen stripes and thirteen stars, representing the original thirteen colonies. The flags design emphasizes the balance between state sovereignty and loyalty to the Union. Officially adopted in 1915, the flag has undergone several modifications, including updates to the seals colors and details.
