Curatorial Narrative The Tomb of Sidi Abder Rahman, Algiers, painted by Ernest Tuckerman in 1873, occupies a pivotal position within the Orientalist canon. At this juncture, Tuckerman’s technique is characterized by impasto brushwork that imbues the surface with tactile urgency, underscoring the artist’s fascination with Eastern aesthetics. The dark reds and golds that dominate the palette serve to intensify the sense of atmospheric weight, conjuring the oppressive heat and grandeur of Algiers’ Moorish architecture.As this work is enlarged to a substantial scale, its visual dynamics come into sharp focus. At 66×44 inches, the chromatic structure begins to assert itself with greater force, casting long shadows that stretch across the composition like dark tentacles.
