Curatorial Narrative The late 19th-century Russian art world was abuzz with the emergence of landscape painting as a genre. Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev’s “Shchit kamyshevyi,” created between 1849 and 1853, finds itself situated within this context, exhibiting an affinity for figurative motifs amidst the blossoming trend towards landscapes. The artist’s reliance on illustrative techniques is evident in the composition, where a central figure of a young woman engaged with nature serves as the focal point.As “Shchit kamyshevyi” is scaled to 44×60 inches, its palette assumes an increased significance.
