Curatorial Narrative Felix Octavius Carr Darley’s “Landscape with three horses” exists at the nexus of the mid-19th century American landscape tradition and the nascent influences of Impressionism. Characterized by loose brushwork and an emphasis on capturing atmospheric effects, Darley’s technique eschews traditional compositional rigidity in favor of a more spontaneous, expressive approach.
