Curatorial Narrative In 1835, Edward William Cooke’s Godstow Bridge near Oxford occupied a pivotal position within the evolving tradition of British landscape painting. As a seminal exponent of realism, Cooke’s practice was characterized by an intense focus on capturing the textures and atmospheres of rural England.
