Curatorial Narrative As we approach the late 19th century, the Romanticist movement is still exerting its influence on American art. Elihu Vedder’s “Anarchy” from 1895 exemplifies this ongoing fascination with the emotive and the sublime. Vedder’s technique here is characterized by soft brushstrokes that imbue the painting with a sense of ethereal lightness, as if the colors are poised to take flight.The palette, comprising red, blue, yellow, and gray, serves to reinforce this luminous quality. The spatial depth created by Vedder’s use of atmospheric perspective draws the viewer into the swirling vortex of color, where the forms begin to dissolve into an eerie chromatic mist.
