The flag of Singapore consists of two horizontal bandsred above whitewith a white crescent moon and five white five-pointed stars arranged in a circle in the upper hoist corner. The crescent moon signifies a young nation on the rise, and the five stars stand for Singapores ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality. Adopted in 1959 when Singapore gained self-governance, the flag embodies the city-states aspirations and multicultural identity.
