The state flag of Delaware features a buff-colored diamond on a colonial blue field, with the state& coat of arms displayed in the center of the diamond. Beneath the diamond is the date “December 7, 1787,” marking the day Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. The coat of arms includes a soldier and a farmer flanking a shield, which contains images of wheat, corn, and an ox representing agriculture, and a ship symbolizing commerce. Above the shield is a sailing ship, and below it is the state motto: “Liberty and Independence.” Adopted in 1913, the flags colors and design reflect Delawares colonial heritage and its pivotal role in the founding of the United States.
